Do gerbils get along with hamsters?

This may be a dumb question, but do gerbils and hamsters get along at all? Can they get along? I figure if they're both babies when they are put together, they might be fine around each other. But would it be safe otherwise?

Mileage way vary to be honest, mixing species isn't always a great idea but you could give it a shot and if you see any possible issues separate them early on

No no no no no no no no no. Hamsters are SOLITARY they can not live with another they will kill it. Gerbils are social but they are completely different animals please please please don't do this!

Just to slightly correct this:

Syrians and Chinese hamsters are completely solitary, however, some dwarf hamsters, same-sex and same litter, can live together though it is risky and usually shouldn't be done.
